Google Local Search: How Do You Get Listed in Google Local Search?

Goole Local Search

Have you noticed that when you do a search for a term and place a geographic location in front or before the phrase, Google will show a map with local listings on top of the search results?

This is called Google Local Search – and it can drive companies a lot of traffic.

In fact, some of the listings that do come on Google Local Search, the companies don’t even have a website, and yet are getting more traffic (phone calls) then the #1 result in the search engines!

Advantages of Google Local Search:

  • Google usually listed the local results on top of the actual search results

  • Google will display a link to your website if applicable

  • Google will display your business phone number

  • Visitors can click on the ‘more’ link where they can write and view reviews, download coupons, see al your partner websites, and additional details about your business.

  • Your business can also appear in searches done in Google MAPS and Google Earth

  • You can get listed here for FREE!

How do you get your business/website listed in Google Local Search:

Google pulls information from two primary locations into their local listings.

  1. The businesses that are submitted into Google Local Business Center (http://www.google.com/local)

  2. The businesses that are listed in YellowPages (http://www.yellowpages.com/ )

Conclusion:

You can submit your business information to Google Local Business Center for free - and they will ask you to verify either by sending you a pin through postcard or telephone number (for verification purposes)

Once you verify your business information with Google, it typically takes 6 weeks to get listed in their local listings.

How Can You Tell What Keyword Phrases You Are Being Found For?

This is a common question that most people have - how do you know what keyword phrases you are being ranked for?

Some of you are still manually testing what you think you might be ranking for - or what you want to be ranking for by typing in your keyword phrase into the search engines , and then scrolling down through the pages of the results to see if your domain is there.

Good news - you DON'T have to do this!

There are several methods you can use to see what your website is ranking for.

Best of all - the methods I will show you is ALL free!

1. Google Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools will let you know what keyword phrases you are ranking for - as well as what phrases people are clicking on to get to your site. If you are not familiar with Google Webmaster Tools - have a look at the post Using Google Webmaster Tools

2. Web Analytics

Any analytic software will tell you what you are ranking for - Google Analytics is a free one you can place on your site. To sign up for free - click here

Google Analytics will not however tell you what position you are ranking for - but some other programs such as Lyris HQ or Clicktracks will.

3. Rank Checker

If you have a list of keywords and phrases and want to see where you are ranking (instead of doing each search manually) - I recommend using Rank Checker
